Abstract
The paper presents a theoretical-conceptual research that analyzes, in light of the notion of scientific paradigm in the philosophy of science, especially the post-Popperian epistemological studies of Thomas Kuhn (1994) and Inre Lakatos (1979), the characteristics of the so-called fourth paradigm of science (e-Science). The paradigm of e-Science is presented by Gray et al. (2009) as a new intellectual standard of scientific knowledge production based on data intensive work has managed to consolidate a wide community of research practice around the world. The work evidences the excess of case study research, as opposed to scarce theoretical-conceptual works that explain and discuss the theoretical and epistemological foundations of e-Science.
