Abstract

The study compares the perception of the aristotelian comprehension applicable to Data Science, with objective of seeking theoretical and philosophical grounds to this emergent subject. The research bases itself on two methods: (a) literature review – on the contributions of the critical studies relevant to the aristotelian philosophy of the common sense experimentation and; (b) content analysis – for its inference capability and comprehension deduction. It argues from the three levels of thinking observed by Aristotle, under the following aspects: (1) senses and feelings are data that the mind receives; (2) ideas are data that the mind produces and; (3) thinking produces knowledge that relate ideas, combining, splitting and confronting them, in which is created by the cognition capability in search of reason. As a comparative result, it finds similarities with the current technologies, which captures data from the environment, using instruments that imitate human reasoning sensory abilities, as well as data comprehension. At last, it considers the need for identifying the roots of the theoretical and philosophical assumptions, in order to consolidate Data Science and awaken for the production of new knowledge.
